Starting a niche blog is both exciting and overwhelming. Once you post a few articles, that “if you build it, they will come” mentality sets in, and you start checking your stats every 5 minutes. And then you realize that maybe “if you build it AND promote it, they will come.” So you spend hours submitting your articles to social media sites like StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, BlogCatalog, commenting on blogs, replying in forums, and so on. Now you’re checking your stats every 30 seconds.

There are some bloggers out there screaming, “This is how I did it! Just follow these steps, and you’ll get a thousand visitors a day!” But for most bloggers, this is not how it works. There are many more affiliate marketers jumping into the affiliate marketing scene each and everyday.

Some pick up this opportunity thinking that it’s an easy way of making money online, while many know that it’s an open market where lots of “big dogs” roam. A rather free-for-all competition I would say.

Narrow Down Your Focus

A niche market enables you to target your sales messages with great precision. The more narrowly you define your niche market the easier it is to cater to the specifically defined interests of people in that market.

For example, some businesses describe their target market as “opportunity seekers”. But this is a broad audience. You cannot cater to specifically defined personal interests of individuals in this group because it may include all of the following:

* Executives who want to get out of the corporate environment and start their own business

* New mothers who want to start a home based business

* Students who want to generate some extra income

But people don’t respond to general talk. They respond only when they feel you are talking directly to them about their individual needs.
